Hi, I’m Melvin Tan and I’ve been training with Genesis Gym since October 2014.
Being with Genesis Gym has been a complete life-changer for me.
I was pretty much a skinny-fat. Although I had a skinny frame, my fat percentage was in the unhealthy zone of 21.3%. I hardly exercised and I was generally pretty unhealthy with frequent social drinking and smoking.
My long working hours also meant I was not getting the rest and recovery that my body needed. It was just a matter of time before health issues started to surface.
The wake-up call was the day I started experiencing shortness of breath and minor chest pains after climbing a flight of stairs to my office. I realized at that these are the symptoms of an unhealthy person.
Given that I was only 30 at that time, I started to panic. I told myself this: “I did not study and work so hard in life, just to die young!”
That was the turning point where I decided to refocus on my health, set my fitness goals and started to change my lifestyle. I wanted to regain my fitness levels and put on some healthy weight.
When I saw the testimonials on the Genesis Gym website, I decided that this seems like the place for me. Unlike personal training gyms that only showcased people with buff and muscular bodies, I could identify with these clients who were not already body-building gym rats but common folks that just wanted to gain fitness and learn the right ways to live a healthier, sustainable lifestyle.
My knowledge of fitness goals, workout program, diet plan, macros was close to zero. The only thing I knew that I want was to have a trainer/coach to guide me on things such as what to do and how to do; what to eat and what not to eat.
When I first met the Genesis team, I was very impressed. The coaches are unbelievably knowledgeable and they were very willing to impart their experiences and knowledge to a rookie like me.
I had no idea how “fat” I was and how that impacted my training programme. After the first body measurement, I look at gyms in a very different way. The body measurement process is very precise, holistic and even takes into account of how many times I defecate a day!
I realised that Genesis was committed to making sure all of its clients train smarter and eat healthier. It never occurred to me that these factors can impact my overall well-being and training. I was truly impressed.
As soon as I completed my first 12 weeks, I could experience the changes to my overall physique. I was on a fat-loss program that required me to control my carbs-intake while I trained twice a week. I lost around 4% of body fat after finishing the first programme and I was amazed at how I could execute some of the exercises. The experience gave me greater confidence to pursue more demanding exercises along the way.
It is coming to 3 years since I joined Genesis gym. Exercising, in particular heading to the gym, has now become a major part of my lifestyle. I believe the training and time spent in the gym during this period have instilled some form of discipline in my life.
These days, I tend to watch my diet closely and make sure I meet the daily dietary goals even when I travel for work or leisure. The progress that I made so far inspires me to perform even better during training and gives me the confidence to take on seemingly impossible exercises that I never knew my body is capable of achieving.

I hope to continue to meet the daily challenging work demands and progress in my career. I believe keeping a healthy state of mind and body is important to meet these work challenges.
My family is impressed with the overall transformation. Some friends are beginning to notice the changes and they are genuinely happy for me.
I would like to encourage everyone not to wait for something drastic to happen before deciding to take charge of your own health and fitness. Such moments may never appear in your life and even if they do occur at some point in your life, you may not realize it is a wake-up call. I was lucky enough to have climbed that flight of stairs that day.
Also, be patient, disciplined and focus on achieving your fitness goals and objective. It will not be easy but it certainly will not be impossible too.
Thanks to Genesis and its capable team of coaches. Although, the transformation means I need a new set of wardrobe, I am truly satisfied and amazed with my overall transformation.
