“The Genesis training system is very aligned with my personal philosophy of having the independence and self-discipline to push myself. To me, the sense of accomplishment is so much greater when you know that you are fully in control of your own progress. And that is done with a fully customised training programme that takes into account my health markers, my daily lifestyle, my knowledge on strength training and my fitness goals.
“At my last measurement, I am now down to 17.5%, which is a distinct over 10% drop. I have also lost 14 kilos to date. Moreover, at my last checkup, my cholesterol and blood pressure markers are at normal levels and I don’t have gout attacks anymore.”
(Gabriel Chew, Genesis Gym Eunos)
Before starting my fitness journey with Genesis, I was at roughly 30% body fat, having high cholesterol and my blood pressure was measuring on the higher end. Moreover, I was suffering from fatty liver and gout.
I have always valued the importance of health and I’ve tried weight lifting around 17 years ago on my own. But I didn’t have proper guidance then and didn’t really gain the sculpted look I wanted to have. Without seeing the results, laziness crept in and stopped after enlisting into the army. I picked it up again about 4 years ago with no concrete action plan and equipped with just minimal knowledge. This resulted in injuries and I had to rest for a year.
I’m not someone who gives up easily. Despite the previous injury and the lack of results, I still wanted to try things on my own. I did gain a lot of knowledge on weight-lighting through online strength training programmes. I thought I could do without a trainer. After about a year, I found that gained strength and muscle but I was not losing fat. I was still hovering around 28-30% body fat.
So this time, I knew I needed to get professional help, especially since learning of all the health issues I have. I wanted to train in a place where the coaches are knowledgeable and where I can achieve results safely and effectively.
I’ve been to other personal training gyms before where trainers looked inept and I actually found myself more knowledgeable than them. And to me, it didn’t make economic sense to just pay for someone to basically stand next to me and give “encouragement” or to scream at me during workouts and maybe even teaching me the wrong things.
I knew then that I had to get help from a gym that is much more knowledgeable than me and has a training plan that has both substance and sustenance not just in the training aspect but also in nutrition planning.
Given my previous experience with inept personal trainers, I wasn’t going to let my consulting coach have an easy time with me. So at my first session at Genesis, I even tested the coach on his technical knowledge on how to achieve my fitness goals.
I must say, I was impressed. Not only did the consulting coach know what he was talking about, my subsequent training sessions have not disappointed me at all.
The thing about training at Genesis Gym is that coaches train the clients as a team, so it isn’t exactly one-to-one coaching. And I actually like that. The trainers don’t hover around me at all times, but gave me motivation and adrenaline when needed. And they are always very open and willing to share and teach when approached.
I find that this training system is very aligned with my personal philosophy of having the independence and self-discipline to push myself. To me, the sense of accomplishment is so much greater when you know that you are fully in control of your own progress. And that is done with a fully customised training programme that takes into account my health markers, my daily lifestyle, my knowledge on strength training and my fitness goals.
I’m always very excited and nervous when I get my new training programme at the gym. Excited because of how creatively the exercises are put together, which makes training fun. Excited also because I get to learn something new. Nervous because I know I will be seriously wrecked for the first few sessions. There was once, I couldn’t even drive home because of the intensity of the leg workout that day and had to rest in the car for like half an hour before I could feel the shaking stopped. But it is precisly this mixture of excitement and nerves that makes me look forward to training with Genesis Gym.
I started to see a big difference after Coach Jen put me on a low carb diet for a while. Having the nutrition knowledge and being consistent on my dietary habits really made a big difference in my overall physique. I looked forward to more knowledge I can learn from the trainers. The customization is such that I never feel hungry – unlike many diet fads that make people feel starved and weak.
At my last measurement, I am now down to 17.5%, which is a distinct over 10% drop. I have also lost 14 kilos to date. Moreover, at my last checkup, my cholesterol and blood pressure markers are at normal levels and I don’t have gout attacks anymore.I’m now looking forward to achieving a 10 to 12% body fat level. I’m looking to continue to increase my strength and get my compound lifts numbers up and perhaps even join the masters category in a power-lifting competition in the very near future.
Other than the significant physique changes and overall health improvements, my experience at Genesis Gym has enforced discipline in me. I don’t procrastinate and I go about achieving my goals in a more systematic and orderly manner.
Looking back, I think I would have saved a lot of time and the injury sustained if I had come to Genesis Gym sooner. Finding a sustainable long term way, whether it may be food or exercise, is the more important thing. And I’m really glad that I have found that in Genesis, where sustainability is catered to me.
Genesis Gym is like a friendly mentor who is knowledgeable and capable, who teaches you to do things the proper and safe way, who tracks your progress through programmes that are systematic and easy to follow. I would like to just say that Genesis has been of great help to me on my short term goal and am looking forward to the next one.
